Despite various explanations that Gwar is an acronym for something, band members have insisted from its inception that the letters do not stand for anything. Indeed, the official website of Slave Pit Inc. indicates that Gwar is a shortened version of "GWAARGGGH!!!" the name the band used originally when opening up for Death Piggy. Lead singer and founding member Dave Brockie has been quoted as saying "...it doesn't mean Gay Women Against Rape. It doesn't mean Great White Aryan Race. It doesn't mean Gay Weird Anal Reprobates. It doesn't even mean God What an Awful Racket. It just means Gwar, which means everything pretty much."

Though the information quoted above comes to us, allegedly, from Dave Brockie, a founding member of Gwar, and so is perhaps lent a bit of credibility, I have heard that this bit about the name "Gwar" being a shortening of "GWAARGGGH!!!" is merely a rumor! I have heard that Dave Brockie has said many times "...if Gwar were simply a shortened version of 'GWAARGGH!!!' why would we not have chosen 'GWARGH'? With and additional 'GH' at the end of our name, silent but imposing, with a presence that is unsettling and cannot be denied, there would be nothing beyond our reach; no stage prop would seem to large or offensive, no amount of fake blood or semen would be to great a volume to pump onto our audience who must then dwive home soaked in our fake blood and potentially stain red the formerly gray seats of their Impala. Often we are told that we have gone too far, and we have heard you, Joe Public, asking others, your friends and acquaintances, your city-council members, whether we have gone too far but will not admit it, or if, as we've witnessed you furtively whispering while glancing over your should and hoping that we weren't paying attention, we had gone too far but were afraid to admit it. No! We've not gone too far and so cannot be afraid to admit as true something that is not true. We are afraid of only one thing; somebody learning the secret meaning of 'GWAR'. We have written in the Constitution of GWAR that any person who learns, whether through scholarly research, divine ritual, or excellent guesswork, the meaning of 'GWAR' will be instantly made a full member of GWAR. This statement is as true now, though no person is any closer to figuring it out, as it was in 1985 when the ink was not yet dry on our founding documents."
We'd all like either to be in GWAR and to have our own foam-rubber shoulderpads, oversized boots, and other accoutrements of GWAR-dom, or to be able to claim that we know somebody in GWAR and that we have been photographed shaking hands with them in full costume, right? Listen, there are some great minds in this group, and if we all start thinking, researching, guessing, and brainstorming I think we have a shot at this. Let the our search for meaning begin! |
